Hardin R. Runnels
This crayon portrait of Governor Runnels is believed to have been made from life in 1857, the year that Runnels became governor at age 37. The crayon technique was an early form of photographic portraiture in which a weak photographic image was made, then used as the basis for extensive handwork with charcoal or pastels. The portrait is shown here at 66% size.
