Allred Papers, Publicity Material

FDR and Allred

Governor Allred allied himself closely with Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his New Deal programs. He focused on work programs, including the Civilian Conservation Corps, Work Projects Administration, National Youth Administration, and Public Works Administration. As a consequence Texas received more than $166 million in federal money by August 31, 1936.

Allred's support of the president and his popular programs paid off politically. FDR publicly commended him for Texas' cooperation and performance in the national recovery program, and Allred was named the "Outstanding Young Man in America" in 1935 by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He won reelection by a landslide. In this undated photo, Allred is shown with FDR and Fort Worth mayor W.J. Hammond. The headline refers to Roosevelt's son Elliot, who was living in Texas at the time.

Late in his second term as governor, President Roosevelt nominated Allred to a federal district judgeship. With an interruption to seek election to the U.S. Senate, Allred served as a federal judge until his death in 1959.
