During World War I, Moody was "one of the boys" in uniform, serving as second lieutenant and captain in the Texas National Guard and second lieutenant in the United States Army. These pictures date from his term as governor, date and occasion unknown. General John Hulen was a railroad executive and commander of the Thirty-Sixth Division of the Texas National Guard. During his term of office, Moody was forced to send the National Guard into Sherman to quell a riot.
