W. Lee "Pappy" O'Daniel

Pappy O'Daniel

Despite being soaked by rain, Governor O'Daniel and his son and daughter put on an exuberant show for the folks. O'Daniel's sons would often canvass the crowd for donations with miniature flour barrels. Pappy portrayed himself as a simple hillbilly fighting the establishment. In reality, he employed a public relations firm to help craft his image and worked for the interests of business and financial campaign contributors.
