Library Science Collection and How to Borrow Materials

The Library Science Collection (LSC) is a unique collection consisting of materials specific to a library audience.  It's often referred to as the "Librarian's Library."

The collection exists so that library staff in communities, schools, and organizations in Texas may have access to professional library resources to enhance decision making and learning, as well as to support adoption of recognized standards and processes for the development of quality library services and collections.

Hours and Location

If possible, please call or e-mail lsc@tsl.texas.gov in advance of your visit so that we can ensure that staff are available to assist you in the collection. We're located in room 414 of the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building.  See Visiting Us for directions, hours and parking information.

The Collection and Services

Our collection offers materials published for varied audiences in different types of libraries. Current holdings include 6500 titles and extensive journal collection. LSC services and materials are generally available without charge. Customers may request consultations, reference assistance, referrals and online literature searches for general and specific library science questions. An "Ask the Librarian" short form is available on the blog page for the LSC. Telephone reference is available during hours that the library is open. E-mail messages may be sent to the librarian at lsc@tsl.texas.gov.

Borrower Registration

Customers must register in order to borrow materials from the LSC. Books and other materials are mailed directly to the borrower at home or work addresses. Register in person, by phone, e-mail or use the online registration form. Borrower registration requires that all customers provide a preferred mailing address and contact information.

Loan Periods and Renewals

Most library materials may be borrowed for four weeks and renewals are available upon request. High-demand materials may be borrowed for a three-week non-renewable loan period. Reservations are accepted for on-order and circulating materials. Requested materials are sent as soon as they become available.

Returns and Overdue Items

Borrowers pay return postage. Materials may be returned by mail using U.S. Postal Service Library Rate. The purchase of postal insurance and/or USPS delivery confirmation is recommended as well, since borrowers are responsible for materials until they are returned to the collection from which they were checked out. There is no fine for overdue items, but an invoice will be issued when an item is six weeks overdue; borrowers will be charged replacement costs for lost items.

Appropriate return mail labels are included in packages of materials mailed. You may return borrowed materials in-person or use a delivery service of your choice. Deliver to the Library Science Collection located in the Lorenzo de Zavala State Library and Archives Building, 1201 Brazos Street, Room 414, Austin TX 78701. Borrowers in libraries with membership in the Amigos Texpress Courier may direct packages to the Texas State Library and Archives at 83/AUS attention LSC.
