Texas Reading Club Manual Bilingual Programs Chapters
The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) hosted the first Texas Reading Club in 1958 to encourage Texas youth to read for pleasure and retain reading skills gained throughout the school year. The program continued annually until 2013 when the TSLAC joined the national Collaborative Summer Library Program.
Each year from 1958-2012, Texas librarians selected a unique theme for the program and artists created artwork, including posters, certificates, bookmarks, and reading logs. Texas librarians created programming manuals to support the annual themes beginning in 1968, which were published by the TSLAC.
A chapter with bilingual programs supporting each annual theme was included in the 2001 through 2012 Texas Reading Club manuals. The manual authors created original songs, rhymes, stories, puppet plays, and other activities for their programs, and they included traditional songs, and rhymes from Spanish-speaking countries as well. Many authors translated traditional English songs and rhymes into Spanish. All of the bilingual programs include recommendations for books to read aloud or booktalk, as well as crafts, games, and activities.
Some of the links in the programs are no longer active, and for this we apologize. Eight of the programs were revised and links were updated, and they are in the "Featured Bilingual Storytimes and Family Celebrations" section below. The sections that follow index to the programs by recommended age and by year and theme.
Since the programs were developed many years ago, we encourage librarians to select additional, recently published books for the programs, in addition to the titles recommended, and to incorporate the Every Child Ready to Read early literacy practices of Talking, Singing, Reading, Writing, and Playing.
These bilingual programs are shared with greatest thanks to the many dedicated librarians who contributed their talents to Texas Reading Club manuals through the years. Our hope is that their contributions will inspire librarians for years to come.
