* Lamar wrote in his journal from the first page through page 104, then he turned the book around and upside down to start at the back cover and wrote pages 105 through 141. About two-thirds of page 94/95 (front and back of a single page) is torn out, leaving one final stanza to the poem ‘To Mary ___’ at the top of page 94 and one stanza that has been crossed out on page 95; pages 96 and 103 are both torn out leaving about an inch of paper from the spine –  the torn page 96 has no writing on it and page 103 shows part of the first letter in several of the lines but offers no discernible text. Pages 96 and 103 are included as separate documents here to maintain the integrity of the journal’s pagination.
