Illiteracy is still a major problem in Texas. Texas libraries and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission are fighting illiteracy through outreach, tutoring, ESL and GED courses, and other programs that reach the entire community. Help our libraries improve literacy and spread the joy of reading among Texans. When you buy a Texas Reads license plate, the majority of the fee goes into the Texas Reads grants account.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission manages this fund by authorization of House Bill 1227, introduced by Representative Jesse Jones in the 76th Legislature to "make grants from it to fund programs to promote reading provided by public libraries." Many thanks to The Tocker Foundation for providing the initial start-up fee to start the production of the new plates and to the Texas Library and Archives Founcation for providing valuable assistance.

Thank you for supporting public libraries!
