island, a cargo of Salt, and some small articles belon-
ging to the Schooner Conchita, of and from Campeche,
the vessel of which Port are not permitted to trade
with the Central Ports. She had gone into Tampico
with false papers as being from Omoa, so that she
might get a clearance for Vera-Cruz. On the 10th
of Oct she arrived having a letter from Mr Mc
Gregor at Campeche for me, a copy of which is enclo-
sed marked G and having on board Govr Lemos,
his brother Col Lemos, the Lady of the Govr and six
children. The Govr and Col had been in prison
at Matamoras for fourteen months for espousing

it was the only chance of life, and which I could
not refuse. [T]hey were accordingly taken out of the
Schooner, and offered every comfort which I could
give them on board this ship, which they readily
and gladly accepted.

the island a small boat, which I picked up on the
beach to the N of the Brassos de Santiago, nearly
new, and having on her stern “Matilda of New York.”
I ascertained from the Capt of the Schooner Com-
manche, that the Schooner Matilda, lost her boat
off the Brassos some time previous, and that she had
left for the United States. [T]his circumstance I
forgot to mention in its proper place. [I]t was my
intention
