For further information of the
$600 enquire of Capt. ______ [?] Mr. Boyd
Col Love & Saml Williams[.]
Jno. G. Tod
I find the above on examining my vouchers for final
settlement in Novb 1855[.] In answer I affirm that the
statements of Jno. G. Tod about the $600.00 placed in the
hands of Mr. Boyd who went my Bail and without any
foundation and and [sic] base and false statements made
by the aforesaid Jno G. Tod. The reference that he
makes to the gentlemen named by him has been done
since I last saw this paper[.] Mr. Evan’s letter will show
he (Tod) did not sign it at the time[.] I got $400
of the money back from Mr.Boyd but the balance $600
I never received or gave any order for in favor of any and
Mr. Boyd sent me a letter on this subject which I filed with
the papers but it is not with them now.

The statement that he paid money to extricate the Brig
from the position I had placed her in is
unjust[.] I had authority from the Secy of
the Navy to draw on Jno G. Tod for any
amt I might want in the event of the
$40,000 not being enough—see copy of
Secy Instructions to me ordering me to New
York with the Brig to fit out etc.
