Mineola. July 19th 1879.

To His Excellency OM Roberts

The undersigned
Assistant Superintendant [sic] of the Texas Penitentiary
having been charged with the
duty of examining into the late alledged [sic] mal-
treatment of convicts in the county of Wood have [sic]
the honor to submit the following report[.]

The undersigned accompanied by Major Goree
Superintendant [sic] of the Penitentiary arrived at Mineola
on the morning of the 15th and at once proceeded
to the duties assigned first by calling on some of the
leading citizens of Mineola stating our mission and
inviting their co-operation in eliciting the facts in
relation to the treatment of convicts in the county of
Wood since the 1st day of Sept 1878 up to the present
time and during the administration of said convict
camp by Sergeants Randall[,] McLeroy and Kelly[.]
The witnesses[,] [blank] in number[,] were duly sworn and
required to answer such questions as might be pro-
pounded to them by the Superintendant [sic][,] Assistant Super-
intendent or any citizen acting under their authority
touching the treatment of convicts in the county of
Wood—which evidence was reduced to writing
and signed by the witnesses, which is herewith
respectfully transmitted, and from which the un-
de[r]signed have arrived at the following conclu-
sions[.]
