Governor Shivers addresses the crowd at his third inauguration in 1955. In his final term as governor, Shivers began to lose popularity due to the fighting within the Democratic party, his opposition to integration, and several state scandals involving insurance and veterans' land (Shivers was not personally implicated in any way). He retired from politics at the end of his term, leaving office at age 50. Going into private business, he remained one of the most influential men in the state.
