The Texas State Library and Archives Commission is charged under Texas Government Code Chapter 441.006(a)(9)
to “prepare and make available to the public a complete list of every state symbol and place designation.”
The following list represents place designations that have been officially adopted by the Texas Legislature through the 89th Regular Legislative Session (2025). Under Texas Government Code Chapter 391.003(e),
capital designations expire after 10 years. The 10-year expiration does not apply to resolutions approved before September 1, 2001.
If you have questions regarding official capital designations, please contact the Reference Desk. TSLAC also publishes the list of Texas State Symbols.
