100 Years of Women’s Suffrage, a Century of Progress
The passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 marked a significant milestone in the movement to secure voting rights for all Americans. The amendment to the U.S. Constitution prevented governments from denying citizens access to the ballot box based on sex. Women began not only voting but also holding elective office and taking more leadership roles in the public and private sectors. The work toward equal rights for women and minorities performed throughout the 20th century continues today.
On the centennial of the 19th Amendment, experience the struggle for women’s suffrage through Texas archives. Letters and speeches by suffragists and anti-suffragists, newspaper articles, campaign materials, scrapbooks, photographs, and artifacts tell the stories of the movement in context.
