I, John G. Tod do solemnly Swear that
I purchased the Services of the Negro Man
Slave named “Perry Marshal” Early in the
Spring of the year 1840 at the City of
Baltimore. That I paid the purchase
money for Said Perry Marshal on the 8th
day of February of same year, [to] Mr. Wall
of Baltimore, through the Mercantile firm
of H.H. Williams & Co. I do further
Solemnly Swear, that in Said year 1840
Said Slave was shipped as Steward in
the Texas Navy, that his name appears
upon the Pay Rolls of said Navy, and
the amount of pay therein shewn is now
due and oweing [sic] by the late Republic of
Texas for the Services of said Perry Marshal
as Steward aforesaid[.] I do further Swear
that the Services of Said Negro, by reason
of the purchase aforesaid, belonged to me,
and as such owner was, and am now
entitled to the pay for the Same[.] I further
swear that no pay has ever been received
for the Services of said Negro subsequent to
his name being entered upon the Pay Rolls,
and that no pay Ticket was ever issued
for said services so far as I know or believe.
