Bill Clements
Governor Clements, accompanied by an unidentified man and young female clown watch the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Shamrock, Texas on March 20, 1982. Note that he is wearing one of the many plaid jackets that were his trademark during at least his first term. This one is undoubtedly green in honor of the occasion. He apparently rode the parade route and then watched the remainder of the parade from a viewing stand.

All Texas governors receive far more invitations to speak at or participate in events than they can possibly accept. As the first Republican governor in Texas for over a century, Governor Clements apparently received an unusually large number of invitations. There were usually a number of factors to consider in accepting or declining such invitations. In this case Governor Clements was able to fit this invitation in with others for a swing through the Texas Panhandle. This letter of invitation is covered with notations from the governor's scheduling office that show the complications when a governor attends a public event. The comments in red ink were made by Governor Clements.

To thank Governor Clements for participating in this event, the president of the Shamrock Chamber of Commerce awarded Governor Clements a certificate of Honorary Irish Citizenship.
