Stephen F. Austin 1823 plan

Of the absolute system to adopt the plan under
the belief that by means of the Senate the
whole might be managed and that public
opinion might be influenced so as to tend
toward monarchical instead of democratical
principles. I afterwards learned that this
plan had many advocates in both parties[.]
The republicans were in favor of it because
they feared it was the most they could
get[;] the monarchists were disposed to
accept something like it because they
feared that by aiming at too much
they would loose [sic] all[.] And in fact in
the end they did loose [sic] all and for no
other reason than because they wanted
all & would not submit to division
of power.
