June 9th 1844

Dear Genl

At 9 o'clock last night the

vote was taken upon the treaty of annexat-

ion deciding it in the negative by a vote

16 for and 35 against. Mr. Benton gave

notice that on tomorrow (Monday) he would

introduce a bill of annexation. From

what I learn it will not be acceptable

to our friends in Congress or to Texas.

Mr. McDuffie has also introduced a

joint resolution based on the stipulations

of the treaty. Other projects will be presented

in the House immediately. On tomorrow

though the two houses have "resolved" to adjourn.

An effort will be made to rescind it.

The excitement is growing throughout

the Union, Polk & Dallas have apparently

united the great body of the party (democratic)
