The route for the president’s motorcade involved 173 law enforcement officers, either placed along the route or serving as part of the motorcade. It was to proceed from Love Field to the Dallas Trade Mart on the North Stemmons Freeway. It was to take 45 minutes.

The motorcade totaled five cars. The first and third automobiles contained law enforcement and security personnel. The second was a 1961 Lincoln Continental open limousine in which sat Governor Connally and Texas First Lady Nellie Connally in the middle (or “jump”) seat. In the back seat sat President Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. In the front seat were two Secret Service agents, one of them the driver.

The fourth automobile in the motorcade contained native Texan Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, his wife Lady Bird Johnson, and U.S. Senator Ralph Yarborough of Texas. The fifth car contained members of the press corps.

Lee Harvey Oswald’s escape route took approximately 80 minutes, between his exit from the Texas School Book Depository at 411 Elm Street and his arrest at the Texas Theatre on West Jefferson Street. Toward the end of this bus, taxi, and foot journey, Oswald shot and killed Dallas police officer J.D. Tippit near the intersection of 10th Street and Patton Avenue.
